Alex Payne — Shortchanging Your X -
Excellent, and the conclusion applies to most things in life with shortcuts or pre-existing frameworks that can be picked rather than putting out an honest product, effectively shortchanging yourself at some cost for some benefit.

The emergency supplies of meaning that are brought to a given incident in one’s life are cover ups, a way of dressing the wound of non-meaning. It’s very very difficult which is why there is then the quick grasp for a transcendental signifier, for god, for nation, for patriotism. It’s been very devastating this craving for meaning, though it’s something with which we are in constant negotiation, everyone wants something like meaning. — Avital Ronell in Examined Life.

Ideology addresses very real problems but it mystifies them. One of the elementary ideological mechanisms is what I call the temptation of meaning. When something horrible happens our spontaneous tendency is to search for a meaning, it must mean something; like AIDs, it was a trauma, then Conservatives came and said it was a punishment for our way of life and so on.
If we interpret a catastrophe as a punishment, it makes it easier in a way because we know it’s not just some terrifying blind force; it has a meaning. It’s better when you’re in the middle of a catastrophe to feel that god punished you than to feel that it just happened. If god punished you, then it’s still a universe of meaning.
What we expect from religion is a kind of unquestionable highest authority, it’s god’s work, so it is, don’t debate it.
— Slavoj Žižek on ecology. I’ve seen a few of his talks over the years, some bore me to tears, some go way over my head, but the ones I can grasp for any time at all I tend to really really appreciate, not even because I think they’re the correct strain of though but because it’s usually something so out of left field I have wiplash, that doesn’t happen often.
